A Moment For Mokko Fundoshi

Quite possibly the comfiest hammock you'll ever lay your cable to rest in, the mokko fundoshi (named for a basket once used for carrying rocks, which it closely resembles) combines comfort with convenience: quick to tie on as an after-shower wrap or for the sauna, just as quick to drop with the simple pull of a single string...

It's basically an etchū fundoshi without the apron -- instead the ribbons that tie around your waist are passed through a sewn fold at the top of the front panel, allowing infinite adjustments for comfort.

mokko, as a word, looks very similar to mokkori, a word which means roughly the same as the english slang term "schwing" -- a term used to describe the sudden popping up of something, definitely an innuendo for erection. And erections are often the direct result of tying on the soft cloth of a mokko fundoshi!

I really want to try this style as an alternative. It's going to be difficult giving up the good fit and sensations of the rokushaku but this also looks like fun in its own way.

Mokko or echu fundoshi are a good option if you want something roomy that won't creep up like boxers do. In my opinion, mokko makes a good beach/tanning option while echu is probably the fundoshi style that will eventually catch on with the most people. It's comfy, adjustable, and has lots of possibility for personalizing it, with the large front panle. The new underoos?

I love this style. and am going to have to make some. However I agree with John the rokushaku is still the best! I am going to fabric stores and trying all different types of matrial to make the best one.

one nice thing about the two fundoshi types that use a string/ribbon is that you can use silky or satiny fabrics. Very luxurious. You can also use thicker fabrics because there's no twisting, layering, winding, etc. So you could make some flannel ones for winter.

As a general rule, though, I'm a rokushaku guy too. It's like gourmet coffee compared to gas station coffee, wearing rokushaku fundoshi instead of store bought underwear!

I made a total commitment to Fundoshi going into 2012 and yesterday for fun I decided to try on a pair of boxers. Something just wasn't right. I felt weird. I like the secure feeling of my rokushaku and the way it keeps me cool and dry all day. The boxers stayed on about 20 minutes and had to come off. I tied my fundoshi back on and went about the rest of the day. This style above is a cool hybrid offering the up front pouch but also back coverage without the (delightful) tie up the butt crack. Very cool approach.

John, how is your fundoshi year going so far? In feudal Japan, practically everyone lived this lifestyle but these days... Any challenges? Triumphs?

I'm really enjoying it, three months along. I hang out around the house and work in the back yard in my fundoshi and answer the door all the time in it. I'm feeling a sense of liberation and confidence that I did not have before. To use a government phrase, I'm decent, safe and sanitary so that's all I need to be, certainly in my own home. No real challenges to speak of but the triumphs have come from getting closer with my buds who are also getting into this lifestyle. They are also feeling more liberated from the "uniform" we all wear. I have also become very self confident about the display of my genitalia. Hey, it's part of me and it's there for a purpose and the contours under my fundoshi look good. My UPS guy, friend and fundoshi convert is all professional when on the job but tells me he wears a milk chocolate, UPS brown fundoshi every day. Off the clock in social settings, we have shared hugs, food and an occasional swat on the butt. :)
