Various Vintage Fundoshi

Included in a recent reader's photo submissions were some great fundoshi pictures he took over the past 25 years. Something about the timelessness of the images, the universal appeal of the body wrapped in rokushaku fundoshi, the muted colors of aged film really caught me. They inspired me to post some other vintage shots along with them -- some that I might have posted before, but they're great photos and I can't really see too much of them!

I think around half of them (many of the black and whites) are by Tamotsu Yato. He has a wonderful old photo book all about the winter Hadaka Matsuri called "Naked Festival." The last photo and the photo of the smiling man holding his necklace are from that book, which was published circa 1968. In addition to Naked Festival (which has little actual nakedness -- everyone is clothed in fundoshi) he has two other books that are more sensual in nature, "Young Samurai" and "Otoko." I've never gotten to look all the way through either of those, but I have seen that at least some of the subjects are wearing fundoshi. A fascinating photographer who died fairly young of a heart attack.

Really fine male beauty ranging from pastoral to erotic and the fundoshi framing all of that masculinity. Really nice photos. Thanks for posting them.

As we get some wintry days, I've found that a white fundoshi tied up snug with a pair on flannel boxers pulled on over that is quite cozy!

Gotta try that. Best of both worlds there!
