What could be better than Valentines Day? It turns out that February 14 is also Fundoshi Day in Japan! 

Let's celebrate this traditional garment and wear fundoshi today. 

バレンタインデーより良いものは何ですか？ 2月14日は日本のふんどしの日でもあります！

今日はこの伝統的な服を祝ってふんどしを着ましょう。

Happy Fundoshi Day!

February 14th is officially Fundoshi Day! Fundoshi Day began in 2012. It was created by the Japan Fundoshi Association, whose mission is "to propagate the use of fundoshi and save it from extinction." They have set a goal of “120 million fundoshists (people using fundoshi) by 2022.”

That's a goal I definitely support! This post contains artwork by a variety of artists celebrating Fundoshi Day.

February 14 was selected because of a pun on a reading of the date 2/14 in Japanese. February 14 is also Valentines Day, and a day in Japan for giving chocolate to loved ones. I see no problem with integrating the two holidays and spending time with loved ones (or lovers) while wearing fundoshi!

Of course I don't ;) It looks like a lot of these artists made the connection as well. So call up a special friend and put fundoshi on each other.

Fundoshi Day is February 14th!

February 14th has served as Fundoshi Day for the last several years, something that few hear about outside of Japan. Serving double duty as Valentines Day, this date conjures more sweet sticky sugarplums than Christmas ever could. Of course, Fundoshi Day is a little more undercover than Valentines Day. Or is it?

Here are my suggestions for February 14th:

1. Wear a bright red fundoshi. Or pink, if you'd rather. Any color as long as it's bright. If you choose white, make sure it is gleaming.
2. Make or purchase a second fundoshi and give it to someone you think is cute.
3. See if they'd like to have a hot cocoa, with marshmallows. Ask if they'd like it spiked.
4. Let the fundoshi do the rest!

Splashes Of Color

One of the best parts of this year so far has been connecting with fundoshi-lovers around the world, through this site and through the new-ish Ryan Rokushaku profile on facebook.

Here's a glimpse of the spectrum this has opened up for me, and all the delicacies on parade that such online introductions provide! A truly beautiful, delicious, intoxicant array of fundoshi'd packages and muscled glutes.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope everyone continues to share such amazing fundoshi experiences and photos!

Anyone can feel free to contact me via the link above/to the right if you have photos of yourself or of a fundoshi'd friend you'd like to add to this parade! I think this is the first time I've broached the conraction "fundoshi'd." Is that OK, or does it seem disrespectful? I know in many languages smooshing things together is how new words get made, but not in all languages. I'm perfectly fine with never saying it again, but, on the other hand, if this is a way to welcome the word "fundoshi" into English, rather than revert to calling it "traditional Japanese loincloth" or however it would be described to an unfamiliar English-speaker under present circumstances. It just seems long and awkward, when a graceful word already exists!

I have to admit, I'm at a real disadvantage because of geography. I only know the tiniest bit of spoken Japanese, and none of the written language. I know people who've visited and lived in Japan, but I've yet to travel there. Something I have to save up for! It's been especially wonderful to communicate with other people, even in imperfect translations, about the sensuous experience of wearing the fundoshi. And so good to share my own experiences, enjoyment, and photos! I'm excited for the rest of 2014, and inspired to get tied up in some cloth.
